Inquiry: Children's Rights

Rich Task
Compare how children’s rights are observed at Nelson Central School with those at another school in a different time or place.

We are looking at how children in Kroo Bay live. Kroo Bay is in Sierra Leone, Africa. The people there live in a slum community surrounded by rubbish. The conditions they live in are poor, struggling to find clean water and healthy homes. We are discussing children's rights and comparing our rights to those of the children in Kroo Bay.

SETTING THE SCENE:
We looked at the Save the Children website that has special interviews and videos of the children that live in Kroo Bay.

http://www.savethechildren.org.uk/kroobay/whats_new.php

We brainstormed what we already know about children's rights.

ACQUIRE INFORMATION:

We wrote questions that we could research to find out more about the children in Kroo Bay.

A GOOD QUESTION:

* Uses the seven servants

* Has KEY WORDS and KEY PHRASES

* Has punctuation

What type of medicine to people have in Kroo Bay and is there enough medicine for everybody? Oscar

Where do the children in Kroo Bay get their water to drink and survive and is it clean water? Quanah

How do people in Kroo Bay build their houses, what do they build their houses from and are they safe? Krystal

Where do the people in Kroo Bay get their toys from and do all the children have toys? Ellie

KATH BEE VISITS

The Junior Choir went to see Kath Bee at the Arts Centre. We sang lots of her songs. At the start we sang a ‘Hello’ song. Wills got to say ‘Konichiwa’ in front of everyone. The next song we sang was ‘Dragons Under My Bed’ – we love that song! We all loved singing ‘Dad I Want to be a Camel’ and Oscar got to go up the front and do some actions to show the different animals. We split into two groups and sang ‘Individuality’ by singing one line each. That was cool. We sang ‘Seasons’ which is one of the songs we sang at our Choir Concert. We had fun singing ‘Save the Planet’. Skyla and Ana had to go to the front and hold up posters so we knew what to sing. Skyla had ‘RETHINK’ and Ana had ‘REDUCE’. We also performed an action song that got us all moving.

At the end we asked Kath Bee some questions and she took our ideas for some new songs that she could write. We sang a ‘Goodbye Song’ which was really nice.

It was amazing and really fun to have Kath Bee at our school. We are very lucky!
